“Spirit” is related to the Latin word “spirare” which means “to breathe.” In the Middle Ages, the word started being used to describe both the supernatural and the divine.
 
If you have the lifted spirit of the mountains, even the greatest powers of the outer world will respect and admire you. You can't make a high jump without “lifted spirits.”
